I've decided to have the breakdown/inspiration as a separate
blog post, as I'm planning on talking a fair bit about what I've been up to and
some of the neat tools I've found to help me out. I'm not going to lie, it
might get nerdy.</div>

I've been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to assist
in the refurbishment, or rather evolution, of 5 Below. This has been around 4
days of solid work on top of a couple days of laying out floor plans, designing,
texture compiling etc. It's the first bit of proper work I've done since my car
model, and the first interior I've done in awhile. Also it's nice to have a brief,
creative freedom (sometimes) is my worst enemy. </div>

I'm not going to talk about how I created the 5 Below images
so much, honestly, there is not much too them. AO render, Depth Pass, IES
Lights, Portal Light, Bevel-Bevel-Bevel, Photoshop. Also I'm in no position to
tell people how to do stuff, I'm just a newbie. Anyway I'm pretty sure no-one
reads these.</div>

actually thinking about turning in. Thankfully, I'm a tough critic, but I do
miss colleagues telling me honestly about my work quality, criticism is gold

A great tool I found was nvidia's normal map creation filter
for PS. Really simple to use, just be sure you've UV unwrapped properly. Otherwise
the object can become blurry. Also its worth reading up on how normal maps
work.</div>

I've been watching a lot of Tested's YouTube videos, specifically
the ones that involve Adam Savage (TV's Mythbuster). It turns out that Savage
is quite that handy man, given his involvement with Lucas Arts, but one of the
best points I think he makes, is about the objects story. I've read a lot about
character in an image, and the conclusion is always that subtly is a 3D artists

I've noticed that a lot of employers look for candidates
that have a 'good eye for detail'. I couldn't be sure how good my eye for
detail is or was, but something that I've found incredibly useful, and this may
be weird, is Typography. Knowing what makes a font good and what makes a font
bad, is incredibly insightful. It's easy to forget that typography is an art
form. </div>

I've been traversing a load of forums recently including CGArchitect, where I came across a piece of art, by arch viz artist Mani Farsipour named Anxiety. The piece had real mood to it, and, composite wise, really came down to less-is-more. </div>

A gritty and dirty environment was what I was hoping to achieve to help compliment to final black and white image. It's a fairly low poly room, I knew I was going to Photoshop the image after, so no point over doing it. Here is the raw render out of Maya.<br />

Nothing special about the render, except the floor, 2 bump maps - double the fun.<br />
I read something by a 3d artist that mentioned the use of the Dodge and Burn tool in PS and how as a 3d artist it can save you a load of time in creating a mood for an image. I also wanted to improve my composting of real people into 3D images, so this was great practice. Anywho, a few hours later and a few cheesy effects later you get this image. I miss the pressure and the astounding feeling of joy when its all over. <br />

So Today I set myself a little 6 hour project. I wanted to model this luxury house for a while so I thought even if I don't finish today, what I will have be be a good base to build upon. What you see below isn't the finished article, but after about 4 hours in it sort of went onto what I could do in Photoshop to improve the final image.<br />

I'm happy with what I did in Maya, it just needs better textures and shaders. It amazing what you can hide in Photoshop, and this was the best way to improve, especially with all the great tutorials and brush's e.t.c. <br />

I've decided to look at compiling passes in Photoshop and compositing effects in After Effects. The reason for this is because I would like to further improve my knowledge of photoshop and AE to help produce a more realistic final product. Coming to the realisation that we don't have long left to finish our film, and that we have a monster mammoth task ahead of us to produce anything close to a finished film, we came to the conclusion (with a little push from our producer) to scrap Easter break all together. So as all other university course leapt out class and frolicked in the sun, a small group of animators huddled in the corner of studio as close to windows as possible (just to make the insanely hot studio bearable) to finish what we had started. <br /><br />My role as a 3D environment and prop modeller was complete, which meant I was up for grabs. I threw myself at animation, something I had not done since last year. Familiarising myself with the sickening site of the graph editor and IK/FK. I started with a close up of Leonard, making the decision of hold his breath and brave the toxic air. My second shot was of Leonard taking a deep breath in the Air Lock. And I am currently completing a 3 shot block which includes Leonard stumbling, fainting and hitting the group, which are nearing completion. Towards the end of the Easter break I was lucky enough to see see my animated shots, along with my environments, rendered and composited. This will likely change and become some what of an online notebook for myself. Falmouth.<br /><br />The Mission: Complete and Render S2_Shot_5_Enters_Shed_DE.350 <br /><br />OK, so enough of the whole mission impossible speech, its late and I don't know enough cliches. <br /><br />The Shot was fairly straight forward, a short fully animated piece in which Leonard exits the shed. However we set ourselves just 7 days to complete said shot, which still needed a few models, textures, a slightly improved rig, lights and of course, animation. <br /><br />That week we had everybody working in the studio, and it was great. And a real camaraderie was formed. People took (and wanted) responsibility for what ever assignments they were given. It felt like that momentum we lost of Christmas was back, the ball was rolling, and it can only snow ball into something great.<br /><br />I wish I had renders for the progress over that week, but to be honest, there wasn't time, the time we had spare we spent brainstorming ways to improve, solutions for problems, and what we would do the next day.<br /><br />But what I do have is the finished 3 second shot. It involved looking at every individual model made by who-ever and changing it to fit the scene, then save it as a new scene then reference it back in, and it makes it look so much nicer and more complete, and less like a mismatch jigsaw puzzle. Also there is no point rendering what isn't on camera, and this way we can just un-tick it. And like some geriatric superhero I fall out of bed crippled, dragging myself to my work station all in the name of honour. To my surprise 2011 Jake had actually done a fair bit of work. As my previous blog post shows the organised interior, I forgot to show the exterior, as well as a preview of what the final whole scene will look like, greenhouse attached and all. The only thing left to do really is to unwrap the outside, and clean in up like the interior, although I can guarantee I will either need to add or take away a few things, but it shouldn't been anything major. I've got a few more items that can be added to the scene such as the mask and suitcase. I've also been given the oxygen mask to model, which I'm looking forward to. I started with modelling a few props and various items of interest. Things like shears, pegs, and the most beautiful scissor mirror, that was wrote out of the script, and will now be back logged :(. Since I've been with the project early on I've seen the story change and improve, but due to these changes I never started work on anything to big, just in case it wasn't needed. With modelling it seems like the more effort i put in the more i learn and get back, i use to model really quite high poly, most of which wasn't even needed, so I've manage to learn how to model 'properly'. So for this project I'm modelling the environment which is relatively 'simple' as its made up of maybe 3 or 4 main factors. The action takes place on top of these blueish Tile Tops that are suspended off the ground by a lattice, these tile tops are in fact a sort of plant/tree and are meant to be the size of a half a house. In the background there is a mountain range that will be a matte painting. Given the size and proportion of the project we started looking at ways to 'cheat'. So for starters the tile tops are really low poly and will rely on good texture for a photorealistic look, the lattice's that are close to the camera will be high poly but for the ones out of focus or too far back will, most likely, be an alpha plain wrapped around a cylinder with just a lattice texture showing. Well for starters I'm in my final year at university, which seems to have flown by. The 3rd year mostly consists of working on our Final Major Project (FMP), I never had an idea to pitch to start with so i opted to work on other peoples project as I felt it would give me a stronger/diverse showreel by the end of the year. So for starters here is my modelling showreel:<br /><br /><iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/-zvIOEhE-BE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe><br /><br />Everyone else (who actually had an idea) pitched them at the Maritime Museum and they all did an amazing job, and made me so much more enthusiastic to work on their projects. Out of the 25, 16 were chosen, and given my 'area' is 3D I started working on the two 3D films. Kernel, a film by <a href="http://olninyo.blogspot.com/2011/11/pre-pixels.html">Olly Skillman-Wilson</a>, that explores the concept of knowledge is power. The story revolves around Leonard, an outcast of such, who is able to store knowledge (which has been banned) in plant bulbs, with the future intention of spreading the knowledge to those who are not part of the political machine. The second is Fentil: Another Life, a documentary by <a href="http://demmy-danimation.blogspot.com/">Dan Emmerson</a> which is essentially Planet Dinosaur, set on an 'alien' moon in a completely different solar system, its wonderfully balanced between logical and alien. It follows a 'chase' scene between Platehead (prey) and Brighteye (predator). <br />Richard Swarbrick has made an awesome 2D animation called El Classico and more recently an advert for The Sun featuring Wayne Rooney's (ok) overhead goal. Individual frames of real footage had been coloured in to create this stylistic and simplistic looking animation that just seem to capture the essence of football and passion of the sport, and it did these use few coloures and brash strokes. Every since i was introduced to Richard Swarbrick's work a while back I have always wanted to emulate it, even if its just a few seconds of animation. So I thought I best get practicing, and here are a few quick paintings of Liverpool's Luis Suarez.
